Review – Uthama Puthiran
Banner: Balaji Studios
Production: Appa Rao
Direction: Jawahar Mithran
Star-casts: Dhanush, Genelia, Vivek, Bhagyaraj, Rekha, Ambika, Aashish Vidyarthi, Karunaas, Srinath and others
Music: Vijay Anthony
Cinematography: Balasubramaniam
The entertainers are back in showbiz now. ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ was a commendable entertainer that was followed by this year’s beginning with ‘Kutty’, which was an average grosser. The same team is back now with ‘Uthama Puthiran’, a decent family entertainer. A remake of Telugu movie ‘Ready’ that had Ram and Genelia D’ Souza in lead roles, Jawahar Mithra has done justice to the film with some interesting moments and few modifications to the script.
The first and foremost attribute is that Jawahar has understood the audiences’ psychology and avoided the songs. Or else, the running length would have exceeded than 3 Hours. ‘Uthama Puthiran’ is a good entertainment and you can watch it for time pass.
Engineering student Siva (Dhanush) is well-cared by his rich family. He has everything he wants as they support him greatly. But when he spoils their dreams by helping his cousin girl elope-n-marry her boyfriend on the same day of arranged marriage, he earns their wrath and is thrown out of the house. However his uncle Raghu (Bhagyaraj) supports him financially by sending money through his friend. On an occasion of helping the friend marrying his sweetheart, Siva and his friends kidnap a girl of wrong identity an she is Pooja (Genelia D’ Souza). She was the same girl, with whom Siva had fell in love at first sight and he’s excited to hear that she is not interested in the marriage fixed by her uncle. Now Siva tries to win her hand by sending her to his family. Rest of the film is filled with fun, emotions and sentimental aspects.
As mentioned earlier, Jawahar Mithran has done a wonderful job by roping very familiar actors. Starting off with Bhagyaraj and Vivek, everyone has spelled the best efforts. Dhanush looks cool and doesn’t strain a lot. Even during dance sequences, he is so serious and imitates Rajnikanth on some sequences. Vivek steals the show with his outstanding comedy skills. His body language and confused facial expressions are rib-tickling. Genelia is beautiful and doesn’t get more scope to perform though the film revolves around her. During second half, she is completely missing as the drama of chiseling her uncles becomes the order of hour.
Technically, Vijay Anthony’s music is okay. Couple of songs – ‘Kan Irandil’ and ‘Usuma Larase’ is peppy and youthful. Balasubramaniam’s cinematography is colossal. Editing too is good.
The film will stand out as winner for this season as it proves be a decorous family entertainer. If the duration was trimmed in bit, it would have been far better.
Verdict: Time pass
Review – Mynaa
Production: Shalom Studios, Red Giant Movies and AGS Entertainment
Direction: Prabhu Solomon
Star-casts: Viddarth, Anaka and others
Music: D. Imman
Prabhu Solomon has his own traits of narrating a usual script in a different manner. It will be much evident if we are going through his previous films. The director gives more importance to the visual looks, which adds more intensity to the film. ‘Kokki’ and ‘Lee’ can be regarded as the good exemplifications, which had a clichéd story, but were depicted in different style.
Myna is a romantic story in village set up and we know what a film of that genre will boast off. The film starts with a flashback of Suruli (Viddarth) in jail narrating his flashback. The story shifts to flashback of his childhood love with Myna (Anaka) that becomes more intense between them as they keep growing. Though, the mother of Mynaa assures Suruli of getting them married, she changes her mind and plans to get Myna wedded to person working in Dubai. Infuriated Suruli decides to kill her by dumping a large stone on her. Apparently gets arrested by police for a 15-day prison sentence and not withstanding it escapes on the same night to meet Mynaa. Just as the police offer (Sethu) and a constable (Thambi Ramaiah) handcuff Suruli and Mynaa too goes along with him as they decide to get married after being released from prison.
On their way, they come across certain adventures that include an elephant chasing them and they lose their way out thereby reaching in Kerala. From there, their journey continues where the police officer is so infuriated with Suruli as he isn’t able to celebrate his ‘Thala’ Deepavali with his family since he is busy running behind Suruli. The parallel story reveals of the annoying wife and her brother troubling the police to come home soon and celebrate the Diwali. But sooner the police officer develops a soft corner for Suruli as he saves him from a terrible bus accident (same as in Kamal Haasan’s ‘Anbe Sivam’). All the four together get back to their hometown and police assures to get them married after Suruli is released and asks Mynaa to stay in his house for shelter.
When everything seems to going well, a sudden twist in tale that gives a bump of shock….
Director Prabhu Solomon has recreated some of the preexisting traits of village love story. The childhood relationship is like ‘Aval Peyar Tamizharasi’ while the mother acting as villainous nature is more like ‘Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum’, the way Suruli infuriates with Myna’s mother to get her married resembles Karthi in ‘Paruthiveeran’, The climax portion is more of ‘Kattradhu Tamizh’ traces.
Viddarth made his debut with ‘Thottupaar’ and he has pulled more energy for giving a good performance. But again, some portions look more artificial and same as the other heroes, who performed such roles in nativity based movies. Anaka aka Amala Paul as ‘Mynaa’ remains as the centre of attraction. Her eyes are so powerful and she emotes well through those expressions. Sethu playing the role of police officer does justice to his role and his prolonged act in climax is a different experience for movie watchers. So far, Thambi Ramaiah has played some minor roles for comedy oriented sequences. For the first time, he is spotted in an important role. Watch him while convincing both Sethu and Viddarth when there happens to be a clash between them, he has done a good job.
D. Imman’s music is good as few songs really keep us attracted and he has shown more interest into background score. The cinematography with cool colors (something unusual in village based movies) is a different attempt. But having shot the film in broad day light, lots of grading works have been done and looks like more greenish.
On the flip side, the first half looks boring as there are no conflicts and it moves with sluggishness till the interval portion. There is some gripping narration from second half and the climax should either keep us appalled or throw abusive comments on the filmmaker for a psychotic ending.
On the whole, ‘Mynaa’ isn’t something a new film to praise about. It is a same styled village based love stories and has some uniqueness here and there. You can watch it once. With accordance to Udhayanidhi Stalin’s promotion, the film maybe a sleeper hit.
Verdict: Good Effort
Thamannah’s verdict: Surya is simple, Karthi is cheerful
Thamanna while speaking to the media said,” After Paiyya I am pairing with Karthi for the second time. This combination has worked out well for this film also. The audience made Paiyya a great success. Because of this I got the opportunity to pair with Karthi once again. So I am very grateful to the audience for this. Karthi is a good performer and it is a good experience working with him. Many are asking me the difference between Karthi and Surya since I have worked with both of them.
Though both of them are brothers as far as acting is concerned both are good. I cannot forget the experience acting with both of them. If you see them in the shooting they will be jolly full and sweet. Surya is a gentleman and a simple person whereas Karthi is a jolly type and always keep others around him in a cheerful mood.”
Shriya Charan denies rumors on romantic link-ups with Rana
There was news that Shriya Charan has fallen in love with Rana who is the grandson of the Telugu producer T Rama Naidu and both are getting ready for marriage.
When Shriya Charan was asked about this she got wild and said,” I never expected this question. I am busy acting in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam and English films. Where is the time for me to love? Apart from this I have not seen the films of Rana. I have not seen him at all. When this is the situation, I don’t know how these kinds of rumors are being spread by some vagabonds. It is normal for a rumor if I had acted with a person in a film or gone out with him for a function. I cannot take it ordinarily if rumors are spread when I have not even seen Rana.”
But on the contrary, reports were that Rana and Shriya Charan are pairing together for a Hindi film ‘Dum Maro Dum’ that has Bollywood’s leading actors Abhishek Bachchan and Bipasha Basu in lead roles as well.
Priyamani says that acting with new faces is risk
Priyamani says that acting with new faces is risk. Priyamani who is currently acting in Malayalam and Telugu films said,” I am interested to act in Tamil films than other language films. But I am not getting good offers in Tamil. I have listened to lot of stories. All of them were heroine subjects. They were good stories. But the hero will be a new face or the producer or director would be new. I don’t say they cannot make good films but I don’t want to take the risk. Some of my friends’ films are not being released in spite of their hard work. It is a terrible that if the film is not released. Because of this I had to be careful.”
The actress had really suffered a very bad time in her initial days in filmdom and finally made it bigger with Ameer’s ‘Paruthiveeran’. The actress is now pairing with Suriya in ‘Raktha Charithram’ that is hitting screens on November 19.
She is also teaming with Nagarjuna in a Telugu movie titled ‘Ragadam’ and Sumanth’s next Telugu movie to be titled. Her recent Malayalam release with Mammooty has a good opening in South India.
Vijay’s unwanted publicity gimmicks
We are really saddened to witness the gruesome death of children twins – Hrithik Jain and Muskan (the 10 yr old girl raped and killed). It is a common thing to get infuriated, but why Vijay has to use this opportunity as an occasion to celebrate his star value. The actor had expressed his views that such persons should be immediately put to death sentence. Eyeing on for some leadership posts, the actor should have instead mentioned that Government should focus on development of children in a right way. They should be taught with the moral values and spiritual aspects.
Imagine 23yrs old youngsters committing such cruel acts. In fact, they should be sentenced to death or even an on-spot gun shot would be better. But to prevent such mishaps in mere future, such quality education should be developed and proper parenting would also help to reduce the crime rates.
Sorry to comment on you Vijay, but you need not make certain judgments. This is not cinema, but a reality.
Vijay Anthony happy with ‘Uthama Puthiran’
Music Director Vijay Anthony seems to be receiving more oppositions from family members as they don’t like decision of acting in films. The actor is now busy shooting for his debut film ‘Naan’. The film’s shooting is going on at some parts in Chennai while Vijay Anthony is also concentrating in musical scores for his other films.
‘Vettaikaran’ was his previous film with Ilayathalapathy Vijay that made good business with audio. Similarly, the duo is coming together again for the film ‘Velayudham’. The film’s shooting is going across the scenic backdrops of Kuttralam and Vijay Anthony is busy scoring music. He has already completed composing 2 songs for the film, which will be shot sooner.
Dubbing works on for Manmadhan Ambu
Filmmaker K.S. Ravikumar has successfully completed shooting for his upcoming film ‘Manmadhan Ambu’. The film has raised everyone’s expectations as it carries whole lot of attractive star-casts. Apart from this, the film being shot in the World’s most luxurious cruise has urged everyone to look upon the film.
