Review – Manmadhan Ambu

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Banner: Red Giant Movies
Production: Udhayanidhi Stalin
Direction: K.S. Ravikumar
Star-casts: Kamal Haasan, Trisha, Madhavan, Sangeetha, Suriya, Oviya and others
Music: Devi Sri Prasad

Kamal Haasan’s ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ kept us awaited for these reasons. First one was that Kamal Haasan is coming up with big budget movie that too produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin. The second reason is the coming together of such big star-casts like Kamal Haasan, Madhavan, Trisha, Ramesh Aravind, Oorvasi and Sangeetha together. The icing of the cake is that the film being shot in the location of world’s biggest cruise. Finally, K.S. Ravikumar – Kamal Haasan churning out so many hits in the past including magnum opus ‘Dasavatharam’.

‘Manmadhan Ambu’ has emotional quotients as ‘Anbe Sivam’ and the comedy attributes of ‘Mumbai Express’. Now you should have a clear idea of what the film is all about.

The film opens with actress Ambujam alias Nisha (Trisha) reaching Paris to meet her friend Deepa (Sangeetha), a divorcee living with her children. Soon on arrival, Nisha glimpses into her past life three years back. Her boyfriend Madhana Gopal (Madhavan) is to marry her shortly, but develops a doubt upon that her character isn’t good. The flashback ends and then arrives Major Mannar (Kamal Haasan), a detective assigned by Madhana Gopal to keep a check on her in Paris. Here begins a journey of fun, frolic, emotions, romance and an unexpected twist in the tale of getting the characters together with an unpredictable climax.

Getting on with the film’s verdict, this is perfectly for the fans of Kamal Haasan as they will whole lot of things to enjoy with the actor’s show. Yes, the actor has unleashed all his potentials to the extremum and he has given a big treat for all his fans. The hilarious dialogues in the screenplay are one of the most engaging things. The twist in the tale during the point of intermission keeps us hooked to the seats making us not to move off. But then soon after the intermission, the story somewhere scatters into various direction as one goes unaware of what’s going on. Kamal Haasan wanted to convey something strong about the relationships, but then he must take it too hilarious. Madhavan as a crazy guy in the hangover all the time has done a fantastic job and it’s really nice to see him in a bigger role after a very long time. Kamal Haasan has done a marvelous job emoting to the situations with the efforts that none could have done. Much more than a performer, Kamal Haasan stands out at surpassing levels at his story, dialogues and screenplay (could have been better in second half). But it’s K.S. Ravikumar who always wants to make everything commercial to the core.

But the film doesn’t belong to K.S. Ravikumar, except the last 30mins of the script that acts as a spoiler.

Trisha gets the finest role and as an actress. She represents the masses of actresses undergoing same problems. Sangeetha too finds a best place at last. She must continue acting in similar roles. Some of her best acts is during the climax with Madhavan. Ramesh Aravind as a cancer patient rocks to the top while Oorvasi does her best. French actress Caroline soaks your eyes with tears and the love story narrated in ‘Neela Vaanam’ that has a connection with Madhavan-Trisha is extraordinary.

All confusions getting together in the climax between the characters is a part and parcel of all K.S. Ravikumar and Kamal Haasan movies that are more prevalent here as well.

Suriya’s cameo for the song ‘Oyyale’ is surprising while Oviya seems to have taken up the offer for 3 shots merely for the sake of big banner and team.

On the whole, ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ isn’t as hilarious as KSR-Kamal Haasan’s previous films, but will work at best for the long Christmas Holidays.

Verdict: The arrows of love, emotion and comedy

Review – Easan

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Banner: Company Productions
Production: Sasikumar
Direction: Sasikumar
Star-casts: Samuthirakkani, A.L. Azhagappan, Vaibhav, Abhinaya, Aparna and others.
Music: James Vasanthan

Before analyzing the film ‘Easan’, let’s make it clear with few aspects. Yes, the film was reported to be a remake of Hollywood thriller ‘Harry Brown’, which is absolutely false. Maybe, the ‘seeking vengeance’ factor can be regarded as the only commonality between these films while there is nothing to strike the similarities with. The film focuses into the City life of Chennai and how the people from village and small towns are easily destroyed by its bad influences.

Having described the emotions of friendship, love and betrayal in the backdrops of Madurai, Sasikumar takes a new route into the roads, pubs and night lives of Chennaites and how the rich brats are spoiling their lives.

Chezhian (Vaibhav), son of politician Deva Nayagam (A.L. Azhagappan) is involved into the usual rituals of a high class society. He even affords to influence his father and release his pals, who were mercilessly responsible for the death of a girl. He falls in love with a beautiful rich girl Reshma (Aparna), daughter of Karnataka based rich business icon Shivaraj Hegde. As a politician, Deva Nayagam plans of fixing marriage alliance between his son and Reshma so that he can acquire more properties from him. But these two are deeply in love and are so happy about the marriage. But all of sudden, Chezhian is brought in a territory of godown and is hit by a mysterious person and his friend Vinod is killed in hospital with the wrong prescription of medicine. ACP Sangayya (Samuthirakkani) is assigned with the mission of getting hold of person responsible for the murders.

Samuthirakkani performed extraordinarily as a baddie in the film ‘Subramaniapuram’ and this time, he plays a different sort of hero role in ‘Easan’. Mark our words! He has done such a fantastic job and all thanks to Sasikumar and Samuthirakkani hard work and research on inheriting the exact features of a cop. Come on Kollywood actors! Especially the ones who though Cop role is something more glamorous, more action oriented. This is the first time a cop’s role has been defined in a different style. The struggles of a police officer, his confusions and duty consciousness and how he surrenders to the situation has been very well narrated. His performance in climax is superb. Producer A.L. Azhagappan is good with his acting skills. You cannot judge his character of whether he is a good or evil person. He sticks to the role of a politician of how they deal with the situations and try expanding their business through marriage proposals. The portrayal of Vijay Malaya character as Shivaraj Hegde is perfect. Sasi brings in the sequence of the character at gallery of IPL matches and sipping the spirits all the time. There is another special actor in the movie, whom on revealing will break the suspense. You’ll have to catch up with the movie. Newcomer Aparna is okay while Abhinaya remains in your senses as even when the show is over while Vaibhav and others have lived under the skin of characterizations.

The biggest plus of the film is the naturalistic portrayal of every character. Sasikumar has well depicted the conflicting natures of characters in rich family and middle classes.

The minus of the film is the second half as the flashback sequence has nothing to offer for such a long duration. Sasikumar could have handled it in a sleek manner. James Vasanthan’s music is okay in songs as except ‘Jilla Vittu’ none of them sound greater. The background score is okay and the cinematography by Kathir is the major asset.

The story of vengeance seeking might be older, but Sasikumar tries to thrust the fact that city life spoils the good ones. Since it nearly takes 90mins for the actual story to start, the audiences may become restless while for those who are well known to the Chennai lifestyle and working system of police, politicians and businessman, it will be a docu-drama kind of experience, which will be appreciated.

If the film is promoted at right momentum, it will surely yield better results in box office.

Verdict: Sasikumar’s Horror Chennai

Review – Ayyanar

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Banner: Sri Rajalakshmi Movie Makers
Production: P.L. Thenappan
Direction: Raja Mithran
Star-casts: Aadhi, Meera Nandan, Jayaprakash, Vishnu Priyan, Santhanam, Ravi Khale, Pithamaghan Mahadevan and others
Music: Thaman S
Cinematography: Sethu Sriram

One thing that confuses audiences as they walk out of theatres is how come a versatile film producer like P.L. Thenappan can commit such blunders of producing an amateur script. The film ‘Ayyanar’ basically carries an interesting story, irrespective of some dim-witted reasoning of script. But the way Raja Mithran has handled the screenplay is really bewildering. At least if the filmmaker had repeatedly cross-checked the script papers, he would have found more than dozen of flaws and illogical attributes that spoil the entire film.

The film opens with a dream sequence of the pettifoggery between Prabhakar (Aadhi) and his younger brother Saravanan. As the conversation heats up, Prabhakar hits him with the cooker that wakes up mother from her dreams. Apparently, she calls up Saravanan in Chennai and asks not to accommodate her elder brother in his house. But in reality, its Prabhakar, who mimicked as Saravanan, who used to be a stammerer. It is a shocking scenario to witness the protagonist burying the dead body of Saravanan. Immediately, the story shifts to flashback of what happened before couple of years. The film explores of the family of Prabhakar, a strict father (Jayaprakash), pampering mother, boisterous aunty, younger sister and the younger brother Saravanan, whom usually combats with him. Prabhakar kills most of his time with his friends (Santhanam and others). So with such a happy proceeding found in the first half, it turns to be a gripping moment for the audiences on what actually happened between the two brothers. The suspense remains as the main point of gaining attention, but when unraveled, it doesn’t sustain in your senses.

Actor Aadhi has purposely taken up this mass role so as to prove his different shade. He is nowhere different from other actors like Karthi and Jeeva, who followed the same pattern. Aadhi on his performance level, lives up to the expectations and Meera Nandan apart from her graceful looks doesn’t exhibit in specialty. Vishnu Priyan gets a good scope in his role and makes an impressive performance. Santhanam is a disappointment as we see him not more than three scenes in the movie. Jayaprakash is okay, Ravi Khale is irritating and Pithamaghan Mahadevan irks with his same role. These three actors have likely signed this film for the sake of money and not for the passion of acting.

Thamman keeps beating the same bush again and again. Why can’t he think off some good music? Almost all the songs are of the same type that as before in his previous movies. Cinematography needs special mention and editing is average.

There are few things that Raja Mithran should have really paid attention upon.

1. The reason of hiding the death of Vishnu Priyan.
2. There is no need to mimic like him. He could have carried on his task even without doing that.
3. Why does he risk himself staying in the house of Saravanan after so much of drama?
4. The police investigation starts at the very beginning and then after a pregnant pause we see them at last.
For God’s sake, so many illogical attributes should discombobulate the audiences. As on our advise, we have got these 4 best points that are exactly valid. Now it’s up to you to decide whether to watch this movie or not.

Verdict: Heroism Title, Clown film

Review – Siddhu +2

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Production: Moser Baer, KBR Productions
Direction: K. Bhagyaraj
Star-casts : Santhanoo, Chandini, Ganja Karuppu, Koushala Rajesh, Seetha, Thalaivasal Vijay, Seema and many others.
Music: Dharan
Cinematography: Raasamathy

It makes us doubt with a single fact whether it is Bhagyaraj has made the film or someone else with his byline. Sorry to say! We never expected such a pathetic movie from K. Bhagyaraj, who had churned out so many big films of all seasons. ‘Siddhu +2, 1st Attempt’ has such a poor story and ridiculous screenplay. K. Bhagyaraj wants his son to be a sweet romantic hero like Madhavan, Vijay and Suriya. How can he get into such ideas with the second film itself?

Santhanoo Bhagyaraj looks more overconfident that he can make anything at an ease. It’s not enough to dance and fight well, but he has to act well, which is the most intriguing part of an actor. The film opens with Pavithra (Chandni) running off from the house soon after hearing that she has flunked in her +2 exams. On arriving at the railway station she finds a so-called charming, chirpy guy Siddarth aka Siddhu (Santhanoo) calling out her name Pavithra (later tells that he knows lip-reading) and saves her from problems raised by police officers. Later he speaks praises of himself saying that he can lip-read; find out the psychological feeling of everyone at the distance. As the conversation proceeds, he makes her know that he too has failed in 12thexamination and will shortly commit suicide. Within a period of week time, he wants to enjoy the high life-style of Chennai (as if he is suffering from terminal disease. Siddhu is the first one to decide his suicide before a week itself. So far we thought suicide is something that takes place within a fraction of seconds). But the +2 students fall in love with each other and start living together (Boys Siddarth and Genelia D’ Souza). They fall in love with each other and then awaits a so-called shocking surprisal that Pavithra has passed in 12th exam and her results were erred due to her father raising problem with her master. Hahahah! We never knew that the respective teacher can hide the results. Later she goes along with her parents to join MBBS. A girl wanting to study MBBS runs off just on hearing that she has failed. (Appa Saamy Mudiyala).

Meanwhile our hero clashes with an encounter specialist. He will prepare bullets with the name of the victim engraved over it. Santhanoo is held as captive and is dragged to be shot dead. But Siddarth challenges the encounter specialist to accept a challenge to release and find him within a specific time.

Offer accepted! Siddarth leaves to the village where Pavithra is living with her parents. Just as we imagined, there will be a stupid side-kick having a shop opposite the girl’s house. Finally Siddhu will convince everyone that he is a good boy and marry her. The twist in the form of ‘T-Shirt’ deserves a Oscar for such a creativity.

We think the synopsis is over and yes the review itself is over. Do you mind watching this film with such hilarious silliness?

There are so many double-entendres in the film that turns off the interests of audiences. How come Bhagyaraj became so cheap in writing such lines and promote his film saying that it’s a family entertainer.

1. Promotion of Male prostitution (he gives ideas that girl hire boys for a good cost).
2. The double meaning lines like 2 Idlis, One Ulundhu Vada that signifies the female parts.
3. Chandni often says that she has attained puberty and is ready for everything. So they can fall in love. Bhagyaraj might probably get garlands of slippers for coming up with such clumsy words and giving wrong perception of love.

We kindly request Bhagyaraj not to make such films. If wants to make a film, let him choose a better script.

Dhananjayan of Moser Baer Entertainments often labels himself of producing good quality movies and we need to ask him ‘Is Siddhu +2, really a quality movie?’ If so, we will stop watching movies in mere future.

But we really feel sorry for the official media partners of this movie, who might have struggled to trivialize the minuses and promote the film as much possible.

Verdict: Never expected Bhagyaraj in this way.

Prabhu Deva – “many things have happened by accident”

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Prabhu Deva has completed his film Engeyum Kadhal. In between the shooting of the film Urumi in which he had acted ha also been completed. Prabhu Deva while speaking to the media said,” Engeyum Kadhal which has Jayam Ravi and Hansika Motwani in the lead role is a jolly good love story. Urumi has a bravura story.

Next, I will be directing a film which has Vishal and Sameera Reddy in the cat. After this I will be directing a Hindi film which has Akshay Kumar in the lead role. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is producing this action oriented film. I have also acted in Thankar Bachchan’s Kalavadia Poluthugal. Many asked me that I am also an angry person and Thankar is also an angry person and how was it possible to work together. Nothing bad had happened in the sets. He extracted the work from with affection. Many of the things in my life have happened accidentally. I becoming a director and actor also happened like this. I was not gone in search of anything. I accepted what came my way. There are lots of rumors about me. I don’t give importance to these trivial thins. I don’t think there is nothing big to talk about it. I am running a dance school in Singapore. I have a desire to start a school here also.”

Anoop Kumar wants to do all kind of roles

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Anoop Kumar dons the role of Arya’s friend in Chikku Bukku. Anoop who hails from Andhra had graduated in Chennai. This is not his first film. His first debut film was Vattaram where he donned the role of an entrepreneur. His next film was Kathi Kappal where he donned the lead role. After this he had acted in a Telugu film as a second hero directed by the famous director Teja. Anoop Kumar’s father was an assistant to the veteran director K Raghavendra Rao for many years. This was the reason for Anoop’s passion towards cinema. He trained himself to become a hero in various fields. He learnt hip hop and other western dances. He also equipped himself in stunts also. He is avid watcher of Hollywood and world movies. He says that this helps him in acting.

Anoop Kumar while speaking said,” Arya is my best friend since I know him fro the time I had acted in Vattataram. So this made very comfortable for me to act with him. In the similar way director Manikandan is also a friendly person. I was able to act so wonderfully because of the encouragement given by them. Though Shreya was a senior artist, she was also friendly. Preethika is also a friendly person. I am also thankful to Media One Globus producers who produced Chikku Bukku. Many are asking me that whether I will act in solo hero roles only. It is not like that I am ready to act in two hero stories provided the role and story is good. I am ready to do all kind of roles including villain roles. On the whole I want to earn the name as a good hero.”

Review – Agam Puram

By admin - Last updated: Friday, December 31, 2010

Production: Gopala Krishnan
Direction: Thirumalai
Star-casts: Shaam, Meenakshi, Anand Raj, Meera Krishnan, Manobala and others
Music: Sundar C Babu

Opening titles like Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Don’, Shaam’s looks like ‘Billa’ Ajith Kumar, sentimental sequences of Superstar Rajnikanth’s ‘Thee’. Oops! ‘Agam Puram’ is deficient in very aspect as director Thirumalai has crafted such a ridiculous movie that doesn’t boast of even a single best scene. How could Shaam get himself involved into the production of such movies? This should be the first and last chance for Shaam to take such risks.

His previous ‘Thillalangadi’ gained him excellent credits in Kollywood and with this release; he would go down literally down the graph.

The film revolves around a Don Martin Fernandez, who deals with the business of narcotic drugs and other illegal activities. Rising up Thiru (Shaam) from childhood, he leaves his property in his name after demise. What follows next is Thiru carrying out his business plans by importing narcotic drugs from abroad. But sooner situations urge him to get away from this fraudulent business as his family members and friends are affected over it.

Taking on with the performance quotients, Shaam does justice to his role. He has been a good performer till the date. But where he goes wrong with the kind of script he chooses. When certain films like ‘12B’, ‘Iyarkai’, are ‘Kick’ that mark his colossal performances and in contrast ‘Bala’, ‘Anthony Yaar’, ‘Inba’ and now ‘Agam Puram’. Our humble request to Shaam is to choose a good project and execute it perfectly. For sure, he will go high on places. Meenakshi could make some better performance in ‘Mandhira Punnagai’, but gets back to the normal clichés as a girl running behind bars. Anand Raj does a decent job with his cameo role. Director Thirumalai plays the role of a photo journalist, but he doesn’t know to hold a camera properly. Watch him clicking photos, it’s so amateurish than the kids.

Unwanted expenses are one of the biggest mistakes in this movie. Does this story demand for so many locations? Malaysia, Spain and many more countries…

The musical score by Sundar C Babu is completely disappointing while rest of the crew has done an average job.

‘Agam Puram’ has no chances of making a successful appeal in box office as it doesn’t carry even a single attribute to praise upon.

Verdict: A Big Letdown from Shaam.
