Review – Kaavalan
Banner: Ekaveera Creations
Production: Romesh Babu
Direction: Siddique
Star-casts: Vijay, Asin, Vadivelu, Raj Kiran, Roja, Mithra Kurien and others
Music: Vidhyasagar
Cinematography: Ekambaram
Let us first start with the verdicts of ‘Kaavalan’ as it can make the viewers decide whether to read it or not skip to the other page. ‘Kaavalan’ might not be the best movie, but it’s a decent attempt by Ilayathalapathy. With a league of unstoppable flops getting him below the charts, the actor has tried making something different with this one. Though it cannot be regarded as his romantic classics like ‘Thullatha Manamum Thullum’ and ‘Kadhalukku Mariyadhai’, it is somewhat commendable from the actor’s part.
All credit goes to director Siddique for having crafted such an emotional tale of romance blended with his usual traits of comedy and action in equal intervals.
The film is about Bhoominathan (Vijay), who is known for his helping tendency and involves in ring fights for raising money for the sake of his friends. When he comes to know that his God-like savior Semmanur Muthuramalingam has some enemies plotting for his life and family, he decides to go as his bodyguard. Though reluctant at first, Muthuramalingam accepts him as his bodyguard. Later we realize that it was a perfect plan hatched by Bhoominathan’s father (Nizhalgal Ravi) to make him a disciplined person and only Muthuramalingam can afford for it. Muthuramalingam insists Bhoominathan to be the bodyguard of his daughter Meera (Asin) and her friend Madhu (Mithra Kurien). However Meera becomes so annoyed with the ludicrous behavior of Bhoominathan as he behaves like a typical bodyguard in dress and style. She plans to divert his focus by making prank calls from a private number saying that she is in love with him under the name of ‘Ammu Kutty’. Unexpectedly, Bhoominathan knows a girl with the same name, who happens to be his childhood love. Believing that his first love has returned to him, he starts speaking to her with strong liking. It leads to unexpected twists and turns in the tale with an unpredictable climax.
Vijay hasn’t done anything special, but has delivered a natural performance. Yes, he is same as the old Vijay, whose main focuses were romance and comedy, but not doing ‘savior job for people’. His innocent behavior, childlike goofy acts are so well done. Adding to his humorous quotients is Vadivelu as the actor spells out certain liners that will repeatedly keep you laughing. Paavam Avare Conpees Aayittaaru, Abraham Lincoln invented cell phone, Bharathirajava illa Bharathiyaara??? These lines are the biggest highlights of the movie. Raj Kiran has done justice to his role and Siddique has given good importance to his character as we see him fighting in the opening action sequence with Vijay against the baddies. Roja doesn’t appear for more scenes, but is okay. Asin makes a good comeback and if ‘Ghajini’ had performance at No.1, this one bags the next position. Newbie Mithra Kurien is nowhere far from perfection as she makes an impressive appearance with her good looks.
Technically, the film is good at places as Siddique has made his technicians well understood what the film requires. ‘Yaaradhu’ and ‘Sada Sada’ are feet-tapping melodious numbers while the background score could have been better. Cinematography by Ekambaram is not so fantastic as his previous films and of course, he cannot do anything with subject, because the locations are limited. Editing is neat and perfect as the transitions are so good and there are no abrupt cuts.
Siddique has changed the screenplay from original version ‘Bodyguard’ as the nature of characterizations looks entirely dissimilar from the Malayalam movie. The first half proceeds with lighter moments and the actual story starts from the intermission point. You may wonder what’s actually going on till the intermission as there aren’t any specialties.
On the whole, ‘Kaavalan’ is a sang-froid entertainer. You may experience the raciness in the screenplay due to the genre. But it’s a okay-okay work by Vijay and we will wait and see whether he can sustain the position in mere future.
Verdict: Decent attempt by Vijay
Review – Aadukalam
Banner: Sun Pictures
Production: Kalanidhi Maaran
Direction: Vetrimaaran
Star-casts: Dhanush, Taapsee, Kishore and others
Music: G.V. Prakash
Cinematography: R. Selvaraj
Editing: Kishore
Art: Jacky
Dialogues: Vikram, Vetrimaaran
Stunts: Rambo Rajkumar, Rajashekar
Choreography: Dinesh
Get and watch Vetrimaaran’s newfangled project of ‘Madurai’. The films set in backdrops of this region had blatantly focused on violence and bloodsheds. But this time, we tend to notice something different and uniquely as Vetrimaaran depict the lives of ‘Cockfighters’. Having crafted such a unique theme, the filmmaker has done a remarkable job with his screenplay. It’s really hard to pen such a riveting narration.
For the first time, Sun Pictures acquires a project that has a substantial value for script unlike its previous movies (except ‘Enthiran’) that were commercial potboilers. ‘Aadukalam’ is an exceptional movie based on ‘Drama’ genre. Vetrimaaran is inspired from ‘Cockfighter’ (1974 Hollywood movie) and Amores Perros along with list of other World movies that are listed during the final credits of the movie.
Set in backdrops of Madurai, the film is about Karuppu (Dhanush), a youngster aggressively involved in the rooster fights under the team of Pettaikaaran (Jaya Balan). Though Pettaikaaran has his concern for Dhorai (Kishore), Karuppu doesn’t have any regrets and he keeps constantly showering his dedication for Pettaikaaran. Pettaikaaran and police officer Rathnaswamy (Narain) have a strong dislike for each other Rathnaswamy has never won any game of ‘Rooster Fight’ against them. Finally, they decide to have a speculative tournament in which the loser has to promise of never playing the game again all throughout their life. On the course of tournament, Karuppu disapproves of Pettaikaaran and goes contesting with winning cards. Gradually this develops hostility on Pettaikaaran as he now hatches plans to bring down Karuppu that leads to unexpected twists in tale.
Actor Dhanush has leaped into the next level of performances as he tries delivering a powerful performance through his mannerisms. He has done every sequence so naturalistically and makes an impressive show. Right from the opening sequence, he is subtly over the top. Watch out for his spellbinding acting skill during the climax portion. It’s a pragmatic approach as Vetrimaaran neatly avoids ‘tragedy’ and yet gives an emotional outbreak through the characterizations. Debutant Taapsee hasn’t got much scope here, but lives up to the expectations as an Anglo-Indian girl. This very factor has helped her out in delivering the dialogues with the realistic style. Why did Vetrimaaran opt Kishore to be in a different style of makeover and dubbing by Samuthirakkani is puzzling. Jaya Balan gets on with an exceedingly surpassing performance.
G.V. Prakash is the show stopper as the young musician has performed a very great significant role in enhancing the visuals with his background score. The songs are so splendid with couple of numbers ‘Yaathe’ and ‘Oththa Sollala’ remaining as the best ones. Cinematography by R. Selvaraj is as appealing as the dark shade revealing Madurai in a different angle offers a new experience.
On the whole, ‘Aadukalam’ defines new line of cinema in Tamil film industry. It’s a special movie that will remain as the top lists of Vetrimaaran even if he churns out hundred movies after 25 years.
Verdict: Hats off to entire team
Ganesh is the tallest hero
The hero Ganesh who is acting in the film Padai Soozha hails from Coimbatore, His height is six feet two. This is Sathyaraj’s height. His qualification is B E. Since he wanted to act in the films after completing his studies he threw away the job he was offered. He got himself trained in acting from the film institute professor Arunachalam, dancing from the choreographer Jayanthi master and fighting from Pandian master.
The audition for the film Padai Soozha produced by C M K Farooq Muhammad and L Purushothaman under the banner Royal Moon Pictures was held. Ganesh Prasad also came for this audition for the hero role. Seeing his physique, acting and dancing talent, director A S Prabhu selected him immediately and also commenced the shooting immediately.
Ganesh Prasad while speaking about this said, “Prasad Raj who is the brother of Prakash Raj is donning the villain role. There are two terrific fighting scenes featuring both of us. Seeing my physique, the stunt master Mirattal Selvam made me do the fighting scene without using body double. Because of this I got lots of hitting, bruises and blood injuries. But without bothering about all these things I acted boldly in these fighting sequences. The shooting was held at Dindigul. When I return to the lodge after completing the shooting, producer Farooq used to wait there with a doctor. Since this is an action film, I have to clash with the villain many times. While shooting for the climax scene, the director A S Prabhu shot the sequences with an ambulance waiting in case of any emergency.”
He has acted very youthfully in the song and dance sequences. The preview of the film Padai Soozha which is to be released soon was held. Popular directors and producers who saw this film appreciated Ganesh Prasad’s acting. Now Ganesh is getting lots of Tamil and Telugu offers.
Will Ilayathalapathy keep his fans away from disappointments?
Being ardent fans of Ilayathalapathy Vijay, it has been a disappointing thing to see that the actor hasn’t given any hits in the past 3 years except ‘Pokkiri’. Now the actor has completed changed his style of film as ‘Kaavalan’ will not have any traces of his previous films. This is a pure heart-touching love story that has poignancies sprinkled everywhere.
Of course, couple of things has clearly signified that ‘Kaavalan’ is a different film from Vijay. The actor has no mass hero like introduction song and there is not even a single Kuthu song. And one more surprise: there are no punch dialogues in this film.
With so many surprising factors, it looks like ‘Kaavalan’ will be a hit movie and indeed a real surprise for his fans.
Kollywood Today wishes Vijay all the best that his upcoming film ‘Kaavalan’ will do at its best in box office.
